disappointed? Maybe it’s you?!

August 30, 2010

no matter where we go and no matter who we meet, people aways seem to disappoint us in one way or another.

Lately though I’ve been wondering to what extent people are actually disappointing me or whether I may have had expectations I was unaware of and set the bar to high for others…hence creating a self-fulfilling prophecy of people disappointing me.

I think there is a bit of truth in both.

I know I set the bar high for myself and never thought or expected others to think the way I do.. yet somehow some people seem to fail at even the slightest expectations or query.

What amazes me most is that though it’s generally imprinted in me that people suck and will hurt you that even today I still am surprised and slightly peeved when someone disappoints me.. which brings me to the next question: do I just give up or do I let go?

Accepting that people disappoint you sounds sad yet feels easier then having your trust abused by others and ending up with the short end of the stick every time. (Putting this theory to practice in the workplace seems to work like a charm at the moment)

When to let go is the next question; how many times does one person get to hurt you before you let go? (The religious ones would state that we’re being tested.. my blunt response to that would be “screw you, I have nothing to prove so why take a test?!)

So how to go on?

For now my answer would be: ‘don’t give out what you are not prepared to lose, and give people at least one chance.. for the rest; trust yourself and your instinct. Though I questioned it before, your instinct will tell you when it’s time to go.
